SWPTA Conference Reflection
Attending this conference on a scholarship was an enriching experience giving me valuable insight into professional growth and experience conversing with vendors in the industry. From each session I learned more about emerging technologies, challenges, and leaders in parking management.
One of the classes I was looking forward to was the sessions exploring artificial intelligence (AI). Through personal experience I have seen the boom of AI in all other aspects of my life, and I was excited to learn more about parking specific AI. The AI class talked about different aspects of parking which as someone in the customer service side of parking, was mind boggling on what goes into parking. The fact that LPR, automatic gates, detection software, space utilizations and so much more could be automated sooner than later. Some key takeaways highlighted how AI applications are already optimizing parking resources, creating a more efficient and user-centered experience which would make parking self-sustainable. The discussion addressed the ethical implications of AI like privacy concerns, job reduction and with AI continuously finding its place in the industry we can hope to embrace change and view AI as the future while moving forward.
As a university employee most sessions focused on city and municipality parking which held similar yet very different problems and solutions. I enjoyed learning the urban parking policy, this class gave me more insight in how businesses around the university and paid parking can impact their businesses. A key take away would be focusing on the need for flexibility and empathy in balancing stakeholder interests. The speakers emphasized the challenges of managing limited parking resources in a way that accommodates business owners, employees, and residents. I found it particularly useful to learn about strategies for opening conversation with broader needs of our community. I left with a commitment to fostering more productive relationships with stakeholders, recognizing that this approach could help balance our operational needs with those of the surrounding community.
I was very excited to learn there was going to be a university event panel as this ties directly into my line of work. University parking is becoming increasingly complex, this session offered expert recommendations and a strategic look at handling the high demand for parking while balancing permit-holder needs with visitor access. The discussion highlighted logistical considerations, such as using designated spaces more effectively and streamlining traffic management for busy venues like ASU’s Broadway Auditorium. While I do not directly work with our special events program, having a better understanding of how other universities manage their university event parking was insightful as I was able to see the similarities of management from my limited experience working with our events team. This session provided practical takeaways for ensuring seamless operations, especially during high-traffic events. These insights validated the importance of cross-departmental collaboration, something I aim to strengthen in my own team to enhance event experiences.
One of the most relevant sessions addressed common issues in team dynamics, particularly the impact of accountability and commitment on overall performance. The speaker outlined symptoms of team dysfunction, such as a lack of shared goals and reluctance to take ownership of tasks, which often lead to lowered morale and resentment. They also provided a roadmap for building a more effective team, emphasizing the value of mutual respect, clear priorities, and accountability. The discussion resonated with me as I recognized areas in my own team where accountability could be reinforced. Moving forward, I will use these teachings to foster a more supportive, result oriented environment where each member feels a responsibility toward team goals and standards. I work primarily with student workers where I think these teachings will benefit them in future jobs.
I appreciated that SWPTA opted for panel sessions as I think hearing from seasoned parking managers was inspiring and practical. We were able to ask our own questions, which many others had the same question as well. Their advice included not being afraid to ask questions, finding mentors, and maintaining resilience amid challenges. The idea that "it's just parking" was particularly insightful. This is an internal motto that our management has taken with our team as a reminder to take setbacks in stride and focus on continuous improvement. The panel’s perspective encouraged me to view obstacles as learning opportunities and to remain focused on making incremental, meaningful changes within my department.
The conference provided not only industry knowledge but also a renewed sense of purpose and professional motivation. The in-depth sessions on AI, team dynamics, and policy alignment have given me the tools and drive to make positive changes in my organization.
Attending this conference not only expanded my knowledge but also strengthened my commitment to my role. I am excited to implement these ideas, supporting a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and embracing new technologies and working with the system to benefit both my organization, my coworkers, and the people we serve.
