The Innovation Wave: How Hospitality is Evolving in a Post-Rideshare World

I started my career as a valet parker in 2012, fresh out of high school. In this industry, you constantly hear stories about the "roaring days" of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. It was an era defined by the glamour of new resorts and the mystique of the valet—the person who knew everything, much like the world portrayed in the movie Casino.

Back then, free valet and self-parking were the gold standard. Being a valet was the "hot job," one that usually required knowing someone just to get your foot in the door. But that was all before the wave of innovation hit.

The 2014 Shift

By 2014, the landscape began to shift. Rideshare arrived, bringing a whole new way to navigate Las Vegas. While the taxi industry scrambled, it became clear that rideshare wasn't just a trend—it was here to stay.

The impact was immediate. We felt it in our pockets as valet tips fluctuated. People weren't lining up for cabs like they used to, and the flocks of visitors driving in from California began to trade their car keys for an app. The tech boom didn’t just change the rules; it changed the entire playing field.

2016: The Push for Paid Parking

As the industry shifted, casino giants caught wind of a new revenue stream. Major national parking operators entered the market, turning parking—traditionally a loss leader—into a profitable asset.

Once the casino leadership was sold on that vision, the landscape of Las Vegas changed forever. These operators competed aggressively to take over territory. Once paid self-parking became the norm, it was only a matter of time before valet faced the same transition. I realized then that I had to adapt, so I joined a parking operator to learn the "business" side—studying equipment, financials, and account management. I knew I had to keep learning or stay stuck in the past.

2020: The Lights Go Out

Then came March 2020. I saw firsthand how mega-resorts that had been open 24/7 since their inception suddenly closed their doors. Standing at the Hooters Hotel (now OYO) as a valet, it was shaking to see the future of our city look so uncertain.

As we reopened, executives looked for ways to "trim the fat." They realized that while third-party operators brought expertise, they also brought huge overhead. Many casinos decided to bring operations back in-house to save costs. Just as quickly as they had arrived, most parking operators were booted out.

2026: The Next Wave of Innovation

Today, in March 2026, we are watching the next wave peak. The Boring Company tunnels are no longer a "gimmick." With the airport connector nearing full underground completion this April, the "hybrid" model of surface and tunnel travel is already moving thousands of people. We see Zoox and Motional driverless taxis becoming a standard sight on the Strip.

The fear currently felt by rideshare drivers mirrors the fear the taxi industry felt in 2014. The cycle is repeating, but the speed of change is faster than ever.

Looking Forward: My Advice to Hospitality Pros

If my 14 years in this industry have taught me anything, it’s that the curb is always moving. We are no longer just "parking cars" or "hailing cabs." We are managing technology, data, and a seamless guest experience that starts long before a visitor reaches our front door.

To my fellow hospitality professionals:

  • Don't fear the tech; master it. Whether it’s LPR (License Plate Recognition) or automated Parking logistics, the pros who understand the "why" behind the tech will always be in demand.
  • Stay curious. The moment you think you’ve seen it all is the moment you get left behind.
  • Focus on the human element. As transport becomes more automated, the genuine, face-to-face hospitality we provide becomes our greatest premium.

The old saying remains true: Keep up or get left behind. I choose to keep up.
