Here We Go! Tips for Working on the Road

Yep, that’s the name of the 5th wheel we are traveling around in and if you are following Brandy Stanley on Facebook or Instagram, you know that it has been an experience. Let me back up…we decided to go mobile once her daughter went off to college. Our decision was based on a couple of reasons; first and foremost was to be near her daughter while she transitions to college. The second reason is that we want to see if we can make it work as I am tired of Las Vegas. Visiting Vegas for the Southwest Parking and Transportation conference is awesome and should be a must for you, but living there? Not so much.

Hint-SWPTA conference is Oct 23rd-25th this year.

So far, we have been able to coordinate business travel and dog watching. My dog is the pretty one. Brandy’s dog is the one that looks like a gargoyle.

We have separate work areas in the trailer, which actually works better than our setup at the house, but getting to this point has had its challenges. We didn’t even leave the parking lot of the RV dealership on our first venture as they have a “training” site in their parking lot where you can set up and stay for a couple of days. You would think figuring out how to replace a blown fuse would be easy… It is now, but only after spending the night without a heater and a forgotten blanket. Standing in gray water and having your dog run through it when draining the tanks isn’t so much fun either. It makes your vehicle smell pretty bad as well if you don’t bleach the bottom of your shoes and give your dog a bath.

Also, I recommend replacing the trailer’s tires if you buy a used trailer as sitting on the side of the road waiting on the emergency road service is an avoidable waste of time, especially if you do it two days in a row. Additionally, we heard that the lawn at the house is a bit out of control and should probably do something about that. At least we don’t have an HOA…

Up to this point, the benefits outweigh the challenges. Spending time in New Mexico, California and Colorado has been great. We have been able to visit co-workers, family and friends in the industry. Business trips have gone smoothly, and we actually are able to be more focused working since there are fewer distractions. We have learned to relocate on Saturdays because there is less traffic on the roads and campgrounds are less busy.

See you in Vegas Oct 23rd! Don’t forget that the SWPTA Topgolf event starts at 3pm.
