Here We Go Again
I blogged last year about the experiences we had with our inaugural venture in our “new” 5th wheel. As I described, it was a heck of a learning curve, but we persevered. So much so we embarked on our sophomore venture last March.
We worked our way down to Austin after spending a month in Ft Collins and Denver. We then worked our way to California to explore wine country, visit some local friends and potential clients. We finally pulled back into Las Vegas this past October to prepare for the SWPTA conference and settle back in for the winter.
Other than learning that crosswinds can be intense (the trailer almost flipped), we learned that we could settle into a routine where we are able to balance working together in a smaller environment without killing each other, we figured out how to successfully coordinate travel for meetings without abandoning the dogs for too long and to truly enjoy the experience.
Our plan is to head out in March to head back to visit with co-workers down there for a few weeks. As many of you know, working remote has its benefits but it also has its challenges. You can feel isolated and out of touch with what’s happening within your organization. We learned that spending a month near the corporate office allowed us to track down people that are hard to get in touch with, relax and enjoy the company of co-workers in a social environment and to just reconnect with the organization. Therefore, we are going to do it again. We then are going to work our way to the East Coast to spend time with co-workers, clients and prospects over there as flying back and forth across the country takes a lot of time and energy.
So, I guess in summary, whether working in an office, in the field or remote, it is easy to become disconnected. An organization can only do so much to try to motivate you and keep you engaged…at the end of the day it is up to you. We are doing it in a fairly unique way; you need to figure out what works for you.
